Palma Network Use Policy

Palma is pleased that the Internet is available to the students and staff of Palma High and Jr. High School. Palma strongly believes in the educational value of such electronic services and recognizes the potential of such to support and expand our curriculum and student learning at Palma. Our goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication. Students, teachers, staff, and parents have access to: 1. electronic mail communication with people all over the world; 2. information and news from a variety of sources and research institutions; 3. public domain and shareware software of all types; 4. discussion groups on a wide variety of topics; and 5. access to diversified libraries, and much more. Palma will make every effort to protect students and teachers from any misuse or abuse as a result of their experiences with the information services. However, all users must be continuously on guard to avoid inappropriate and illegal interaction with the information services.

The use of the Palma electronic information system is a privilege, not a right. Each person who receives an account will participate in an orientation or training course with a member of Palma's Technology Team on the proper behavior and use of the network and agree in writing to the provisions of the Contract as outlined below. The Palma System Administrator decides what is appropriate use and his decision is final; the System Administrator may close or cancel an account at any time deemed necessary. Any member of the staff, faculty, or administration of Palma High School may request that the System Administrator deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts. The provisions of the Palma on-line Information Service Contract as student responsibilities are:

As members of Palma, students and staff will accept personal responsibility for reporting any misuse of the network to the System Administrator;

  1. All the rules of conduct described in the Palma Student & Parent Handbook apply when on the network; actions reflect on the individual and Palma;
  2. Never give your full name, home address, phone number or any other personal information to anyone on the computer network, especially on the Internet; your user identification code (password) and electronic mail address are the only identifiers needed for access or communications;
  3. Never share your password or account with anyone as you have full responsibility for the use of your account; you will be held responsible for any violations of these guidelines that can and will be traced to your account;
  4. Respect all copyright rules regarding software, information, and attributions of authorship; commercial software may not be installed on any computer at Palma without the expressed approval of the System Administrator;
  5. All materials received from the information service must be stored on your own personal floppy disk and not on the school network or computer;
  6. Everyone has a right to privacy in electronic communications; this extends to e-mail in particular;
  7. Good manners and good taste are the rule no matter what environment you are in; think before you act; and
  8. If you notice any network problem, or anyone abusing the System, notify the System Administrator at once.

The following items represent unacceptable usage of the Palma Information Services:

  1. Vandalism in a network is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user or any other agencies or networks that are connected to the System; this includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses;
  2. Impersonation, anonymity, and pseudonyms are not permitted; each individual must take responsibility for his own actions and words;
  3. Using the network for financial gain or for any commercial or illegal activity;
  4. Any non-educational purpose;
  5. Activities involving the dissemination of obscene and/or indecent material or any other material which is unsuitable for students;
  6. Any forms of obscene, harassing or abusive on-line language;
  7. Posting of personal communications in a public forum without the original author's prior consent; and
  8. Monopolizing computer time when others might need to use the service.

Palma High School makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. Palma High School and its employees will not be responsible for any damages or loss of data resulting from delays, non-deliveries, mix-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by its own negligence or the errors or omissions of others. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at the user's risk. Palma High School specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through the Palma electronic system. Users must be aware that there are services available on the Internet that might be offensive to certain groups of users.
