Paul
Alioto
Paul
begins his Fourth year as the
Varsity Head Coach at Palma and
his 16th year in coaching. Along
the way he has coached 4 JC All
Americans including, Palma Alum
and former St. Mary's standout,
E.J. Rowland. Alioto states, "I
am looking forward to this
season, after finishing strong
last year (27-3) and returning 3
of our starters. I have also been
fortunate in acquiring such a
great staff of coaches who have
played or coached on championship
teams. They will bring experience
and knowledge to pass along that
will be invaluable to our players
and the program. The players have
worked extremely hard all summer
and in the pre-season and
continue to represent the Palma
community in a positive way. This
will once again be an exciting
team to watch."

Varsity
Assistant -
Matt
Amaral
Matt begins his
Tenth season as an assistant on
the Varsity staff. He will be
responsible for all aspects of
teaching the game with a special
emphasis on developing the
Offense, assisting with scouting
reports and team defense. "With
his knowledge of the game and
attention to detail, I couldn't
ask for a better assistant," said
Coach Alioto. Matt played four
years of Varsity Basketball at
Palma where he was a starting
guard on the 1992 State
Championship team.

Assistant -
Chad
Amaral
Chad begins his Tenth season
as an assistant and his seventh
on the Varsity Staff. He will
also be responsible for teaching
all aspects of the game with a
special emphasis on developing
the Zone Offense and working with
the point guards. "Not only do I
have one great assistant but
having Chad gives me two guys
with great knowledge and a feel
for the game. He is a very
positive influence on the kids
and keeps everyone upbeat,"
according to Coach Alioto. Chad
played four years of Varsity
Basketball at Palma where he was
a starting guard on the 1992
State Championship team.

JIM BASS

Marty
begins his Second season
as a JV Head Coach. He
has a great
understanding of our
system having worked
together at Hartnell and
is a tireless worker. He
coached boys and girls
at both Notre Dame and
Palma so is very
experienced at what it
takes to be successful
at the High School
level. "Marty brings
tremendous passion for
teaching the game and is
a good tactician as
well. He will do a fine
job in preparing the
kids to move on to the
Varsity level," said
Coach Alioto.

Jim is
back for his Second
Season as a JV Assistant
Coach. As a Palma Alum,
"Jim played on a
Championship team in
1988, he knowns what it
takes to win and will
teach that to the
players. He was a great
competitor and I am very
pleased to add him to
the staff as he will
team well with Coach
Opseth," said Coach
Alioto.

Kelly begins his
Third year as the
Freshmen Head Coach. "He
has been very successful
his first two seasons in
winning back to back
TCAL titles. He has a
great ability to pick
things up quickly and
relate it to the kids.
It is important that we
start the Freshmen out
with good habits and
fundamentals and I know
that Coach Lopez will be
great at doing just
that. As an Alum, he
helps to teach our
incoming players about
the Palma tradition,"
said Coach Alioto. Kelly
was a starting guard on
the 2001 CCS
Championship team.
