Summary:
TCAL Jamboree: After a hard practice the day before the Varsity team used the meet as a recovery day. The teams times reflect that. All the other runners ran in the JV race and did quite well for the first race of the year. Fine performances were turned in by Jack Kurzava, Chris Sandoval and Josh Thomas that lead the team to an overwhelming victory in the race.
Early Bird: This year the race was run at Toro because of construction going on at the NMC school. Stellar performances were turned in by Tyre Johnson who finished 10th in the Sophomore race in 16:58 and Chris D'Arrigo who finished 3rd in the Freshmen race in 17:28. The Senior team and the Sophomore team finished 8th overall in the meet, and the Freshmen team finished 19th our of 50 teams competing this year.
Chieftain Invite - 32 teams competed in this year invite and the meet ran without any difficulty. Many thanks go to Mark McConnell for timing and scoring the meet and all the parent volunteers that made it such a success. The team as a whole run very well. The combined boys teams finished 5th over all. Fine performances were turned in by the Frosh/Soph team lead by 3rd place finisher Tyre Johnson. The Frosh/Soph team finished first in the meet. This is the first time a Palma team has won the invite. The JV team put in an impressive showing finishing 4th in their race and lead by Matt Nervino. We hope he is in full form soon. The Varsity team finished 9th in their race lead by Liam Rose, Steve Otero and Ross Majewski.
Duel vs. Salinas High - It was a beautiful day to run and the boys delivered. The Varsity team took the first five places (Tyre Johnson, Liam Rose, Steve Otero, Ross Majewski and Chris D'Arrigo). The spread was 36 seconds for the lead gap. the Varsity score was 15 - 44. The JV team almost did the same thing. They scored a 19 - 44 victory with David Garcia, Matt Nervino, Josh Thomas, Demetric Olivares and Corin Hamilton rounding out the team. The F/S team had a close match but could not prevail losing 30 to 25. The lead was lead by 1st place finisher Alex Wutke and 2nd place finisher Greg Johnson. Team records: Varsity 1-0, JV 1-0 and F/S 0-1.
Duel vs. Alisal High - It was a break out day for a number of people today. Chris Sandoval is just about back into form running an impressive 18:11 despite running the wrong way twice. David Garcia shattered the 18:00 barrier running 17:47 and becoming the 5th man. Matt Nervino running his best time of the year. Alex Wutke looking at that 18:00 mark and finishing first in the Frosh/Soph race. In the team scoring the Varsity team lead by Tyre Johnson and the senior contingent impressively crushed Alisal by a score of 21 - 35. The JV easily won their match finishing 1 - 5 with a score of 15 - 48. The Frosh/Soph team did not have a team to compete against and won 15 - 50. League records are Varsity 2-0, JV 2-0 and F/S 1-1. Next meet is the City meet.
Stanford Meet - The team finished just out of the money but ran very well and showed that Palma will be one of the teams to beat at CCS. Great times were turned in by 8th place finisher Tyre Johnson with a 16:31, Steve Otereo with a 17:12 and Liam Rose with a 17:18 over the 5000m course. The team finished 5th overall. Great job guys and go get'em a he City Meet.
Salinas City Meet - The Chieftain came to run and run over the field they did. The Chieftains made it a clean sweep of all divisions on the Toro Park course. The Varsity won with 30 points and three medal winners (Tyre Johnson 2nd, Steve Otero and Liam Rose). The average team time was 17:11. David Garcia shattered 18:00 minute mark and has been showing great improvement over the last meets. The JV race was the race of the day. The team won over Salinas High by the score of 36 - 38. Corin Hamilton passed a Salinas runner in the stretch to secure the win. Top finishers were Josh Thomas 2nd, Matt Nervino 3rd, Corin Hamilton 5th and Steve Calvario 7th. The Frosh/Soph team almost finished with a perfect score. Their team total was 17 points with 5 medal winners (Chris D'Arrigo 1st, Brandon Kuschill 2nd, Alex Wutke 3rd, Jack Kurzava 5th and Greg Johnson 6th). Fine times were put in also by all the freshmen who ran PR's and Sam Thorp who help in the JV victory.
Clovis Invite - It was a great day for running in Clovis. It was also a chance to run on he state meet course, where we hope to be in the last week in November. The Varsity team ran extremely well against a strong field finishing 5th out of 31 teams. Steve Otero ran a personal best of 16:56 and finished in 16th. Tyre Johnson finished in 13th, Ross Majewski 52nd, Liam Rose 53rd, Chris D'Arrigo 62nd, Dave Garcia 72nd, and Alex Wutke 93rd in a field of 185 runners. Great job guys.
Hollister, North Salinas and Alvarez Quad - The legs were too tired to go today, but is was close and we gave Hollister something to think about. The Varsity lost to Hollister 24-31 and defeated North Salinas 21-38 and Alvarez 15-50. Tyre Johnson finished second 16:32 overall while Steve Otero finished 6th 17:19. JV boys ended up the same as the varsity, losing to Hollister 24-34 but defeating both North Salinas 15-50 and Alvarez 19-42. Team was lead by returning runner Chris Sandoval , bad bout with poison oak, with his third place finish, Josh Thomas finishing 4th and Steve Calvario 6th. On the Frosh/Soph level the team made it a clean sweep defeating Hollister 26-29, North Salinas 17-43 and Alvarez 15-50. Five top finishers for Palma were Alex Wutke 2nd, Jack Kurzava 3rd, Brandon Kuschill 5th, Greg Johnson 6th and Ethan Shaw 12th. Team records Varsity 4 - 1, JV 4 - 1, Frosh/Soph 4 - 1. Next duel will be at Gilroy. Next meet is Saturday at 10:00 at the Monterey Bay Invite at Toro Park.
Monterey Bay Invite - The Frosh/Soph team shinned on the cloudy day at Toro Park. Chris D'Arrigo again ran 17:31 and finished second in the race, with Brandon Kurschill 7th, Jack Kurzava 8th, Alex Wutke 18th and Greg Johnson 22nd all in the medals. The team finished first for the second time this year. The JV team was a little thin with SAT's this weekend. With just the five remaining runners the team finished 4th just 4 points out of 2nd place. Medal winners were Chris Sandoval 5th, Matt Nervino 20th and Steve Calvario 22nd. Just like a fish nibbling at your line and taking the bait. Sooner or later it will be caught. That is the feeling we have right now with Carmel. We just have to have patience and the fish will be caught. The Varsity Team finished 5th again, with Carmel just in front of us, for the 3rd week in a row behind solid performances from the seniors and Tyre.
Gilroy Duel - Overcast, gloomy but not for the Chieftains as they swept away Gilroy. The Varsity was hard pressed by Gilroy's much improved team. The score was 25 - 30 in a close match. The Seniors and Tyre lead the charge. The other two races were not very close the JV won 18 - 42 and the F/S won 19 to 36. So fine times were turned in by just about everyone. So standouts were Liam Rose 17:02, David Garcia 17: 46, Sam Thorp 20:30, Alex Wutke winning the F/S race at 18:08, Brandon Kuschill 18:13, Jack Kurzava 18:22 and Mariano Ottone 23.25. League Records Varsity 5-1, JV 5-1 and the F/S 5-1. Great job and good luck in the championships next week.
TCAL Championships - The bagpipes where playing a lot of sour notes as the Chieftains came away with with no titles. Titles are not everything though. There was plenty of light to make the day seem somewhat redeemed. Eight runners turned in personal bests on the Toro course, the Frosh/Soph team finished second and it was a beautiful day to enjoy the park and view plenty of races. We a sad to see a number of senior runners run their last race for Palma (Josh Thomas, Jesse Ramirez, Sam Thorp, Demetric Olivares and Robert Bellinger). They will be missed and we thank them for their dedication and leadership throughout the season. The day started with the Frosh/Soph race and we knew it was going to be close. The final score was 27 Salinas and 28 Palma. The Palma and Salinas runners top five were all in the top 10 finishers. Chris D'Arrigo 2nd (17:38), Jack Kurzava 3rd (17:40), Alex Wutke 5th (17:57) were all-league runners. The JV race the team finished the season in third place with Chris Sandoval 3rd (18:15) and Matt Nervino 7th (18:59) taking all-league honors. In the Varsity race the heat got the better of us. Tyre Johnson and Dave Garcia turned in great performances (Trye 3rd and all-league honors and Dave Garcia a personal best). The team just did not have it today. There is time for redemption though at CCS in two weeks and and Chieftains, especially the seniors are hungry and ready to meet the challenge.
CCS Championships - On this rainy day the Chieftains reigned. For the second time in school history the Cross Country team won the CCS Division IV title. The dream has come true and what coach was saying all season that we would win came true. Liam Rose was the shinning star this day finishing as our second man. He gave it his all to run a personal best and push the team past the first ranked Carmel team. The score was Palma 51 and Carmel 58. The team ran with a mission and wanted to erase the memory of two weeks before. Great job guys and good luck at the State Meet in Fresno.
State Championships - What an experience it was going to the state meet in Fresno. We were the first race of the day and started our day getting up at 4:30 for breasfast. with the race starting at 8:30 we had to get a early start. The morning was crisp, but a great day for running. The runners gave thier best and finished the race in 11th place with Trye Johnson finishing in 20th place. We coulld not have had this experience if not for the talents and leadership of our seniors Ross, Steve, Liam and David. They will be greatly missed. It was also a pleasure to run with this team all year and it is our hope that this can become a tradition.
