2001-2002
* * Down 1-0 and with time
running out, Sweeper Joey Melo made a long run in transition
play deep into Hollister territory. After receiving a cross
from the wing he was taken down well inside the Hollister
box. David Jones converted the PK in the 79th minute and the
Chieftain's opened MBL play with a tie. Erik Carvalho split the
defense twice (once on an assist from Luca Casabella) and
went one-on-one with Monterey's keeper to send the
Chieftains into the half with a 2-0 lead. The defense bent,
but did not break in the first few minutes of the second
half to hold on for Palma's first win of the
season * Wells Adams' close in play
with the North Salinas keeper set up Luca Casabella's 71st
minute goal as Palma came from behind for the fourth time
this year to salvage a tie. * * The Chieftains held Alisal
scoreless for 53 minutes with tough defense and the
courageous goal keeping of Joey Melo, but couldn't generate
the offense needed to score against an equally tough Alisal
defense. Keeper Joey Melo's 10 first
half saves kept Palma alive. The defense played tough all
day with courageous efforts by Clayton Allison, Joe
Lansford, Scott Sierra and Carlos Torres, but in the end
could not keep Ibarra contained with his diagonal runs as
the Alvarez midfield overloaded one side first then the
other. Gilroy capitalized early on
their control of the midfield taking control of the match in
the first minute. The Chieftain's reorganized at the half,
brought the midfield under control and were able to create
several opportunities of their own, but the Mustang's
defense held. Palma moved the ball well
controlling the midfield for most of the match and creating
several opportunities, but the forwards could not get by the
physical play of the Live Oak defense for a shot. Coming off a tough, four
game stretch, the Chieftains came ready to play. They moved
the ball well through the midfield and into the attacking
third, but for the third match in a row could not
convert. * * * * *
