I.     Course Title: 8th Grade Theology

"The Church through History"

 

II.     Course Description:

The course is an introductory course on Church history.  It attempts to help students come to an appreciation of two concepts:  History and Church.  Students will learn and describe history as story rather than chronology.  Students will learn how Christ has been and continues to be manifest through Christians in particular historical circumstances.

 

III.   Student Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the students will:

            A. Understand the feast of Pentecost and the Jewish roots of Christianity.

            B. Understand major time periods in the development of the Church.

            C. Understand the beauty and hope of the Renaissance through research Projects.

            D. Understand the reasons that caused the Protestant Reformation.

            E. Examine the attitudes of the modern church in Moral teaching.

                        ESLR addressed:  Spiritual, Moral  (ACRE 2. 30, 35, 36, 49)

            F. Examine the attitudes and teachings of the modern church concerning Social

                 Teachings. 

                        ESLR addressed:  Physical, Spiritual/Moral  (ACRE 2. 3, 13, 22, 49)

            G. Identify leaders in the modern church and the roles they have played.

                        ESLR addressed:  Intellectual  (ACRE 2. 4, 12, 27, 39)

            H. Explore today's Global Church.

IV.     Student Assessment:

The student performance in this course will be measured by:  Test, Quizzes,

Homework, Class work, and Projects.

 

V.      Course Content:

            In this course students will:    

            A. Learn about the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

            B. Learn how the Apostles formed the early church

            C. Learn to understand the events in history that have led us to our

                 Church today.

            D. To become aware of the hope of the Renaissance.

            E. To understand the events that created the Church in the Americas

            F. To understand the recent developments in the Catholic Church

           

 

VI.     Teaching Strategies:

Prayer, Bible Studies, Lectures, DVD, Speakers, Discussions, Art Projects, Recitation,

Research Projects, Reading Text, Internet Research, Power Point Presentations, Student Power Point Presentations, Story Telling, Studying Maps of the Holy Land and other church related areas, using Google Earth and other online mapping, and Reading the Bible.

Text Book "The Church through History".

The New American Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
